Parents show strong support as new school year begins

In a show of strong support, more than 250 parents Thursday night packed the Southwest Campus multi-purpose room where they were briefed on Varnett’s educational and behavioral policies.

The combined session for parents of Pre-K and kindergarten-through-5th grade students was the last of three meetings held this week. East Campus held its meeting on Tuesday and Northeast on Wednesday.

Southwest Campus Director Twilet Alexander reviewed with parents the policies that are spelled out in the Parent Handbook. New Southwest Pre-K Director Carla Harris introduced herself and gave a brief bio to the audience.

The 37-page handbook addresses policies on homework, transportation, visitors, cafeteria services, discipline, parent and community involvement, English as a Second Language and special education. Dora Morrow, the discipline and attendance coordinator, emphasized that bullying won’t be tolerated and gave instructions for anybody who believes he or she has been bullied.

Members of the audience applauded when told that school bus transportation for field trips will be free, except when they are to areas outside the Houston city limits.

For those who do not have parent handbooks, pick up a copy at your child’s campus.
