Grandparents honored at Varnett, share breakfast with students

Grandparents flocked to Varnett  Friday, Sept. 5, to share breakfast with their loved ones during a pre-celebration of Grandparents Day, which occurred on Sunday.

The holiday, signed into law by President Carter in 1978, is in honor of the contributions that grandparents make in the lives of families. Many families in the United States observe Grandparents Day on the first Sunday of September after Labor Day.

The Friday morning event also kicks off a year of family activities at Varnett in a show of support for the education of Varnett’s students.

About 300 grandparents attended breakfast at the Southwest campus cafeteria and the Southwest PreK cafeteria, said Ms. LaTonja Lacey, Varnett’s food service coordinator. They and their grandchildren were treated to a healthy breakfast of Kolache, cereal, fresh fruit and milk.

Jared Sutton, a 4th grader at Southwest, had two grandparents join him for the morning meal.
“The breakfast and the way it was set up went smoothly,” said Jared’s grandfather, Mr. Ivory Albro.  He added that he has a serious conversation with his grandson, who lives with him.

“We talked about moving up in grades,” said Mr.  Albro, a retired heavy equipment operator. “It won’t be as easy as it has been before. He’s got to buckle down and understand the work he is doing. But he’s pretty smart.”

At PreK, a group of children sang a "Happy Grandparents Day" song to the tune of Happy Birthday.

Varnett thanks all the grandparents who joined their grandchildren  at Southwest, Northeast and East campuses for an enjoyable time.
