Thanksgiving is a week away but some students and parents had a practice run Thursday at the Southwest Campus cafeteria.
The menu included turkey, greens, yams, wheat roll, fruit, milk and even chicken. Several students came with Thanksgiving- and Native American-style head wear in preparation for their special meal.
Parents talked about giving thanks for what they have.
“I’m thankful that God has given us life, health and strength,” said Edgar Usher, a pastor who shared lunch with his daughter, Ashley, a kindergartner. “I’m also thankful for a good school like Varnett.” East and Northeast campuses also had a special lunch today.
The day after Thanksgiving - November, 28 in 2014 - is American Indian Heritage Day. On this day, people celebrate by recognizing the rich cultural heritage, history and vital contributions of American Indians. In Texas, however, the 2013 Legislature passed a bill that the last Friday in September be designated American Indian Heritage Day.
The staff at Varnett thanks the parents and guardians for sharing a pre-Thanksgiving meal with their children.
