Holiday celebration mixed with educational and health messages

Learning did not take a day off December 12 even as parents and students started the celebration of the winter holiday season.

Caroling, art activities, food and entertainment took center stage at both the Southwest K – 5 and Southwest Pre-K campuses. However, many parents also visited the library where they were briefed on the upcoming standardized tests for their children, introduced to key Kindle educational sites and received free books from Scholastic Book Fairs to increase literacy awareness.  They also took a lesson on the use of Kindles and notebook laptops that are the key learning tools for  students throughout the district.

“We wanted this to be a holiday program but also wanted to reach out to parents in the areas of education and health issues,” said Ms. Jones, the Southwest Campus’ K-2 curriculum coordinator.

On hand were representatives from South Texas Dental, United Way and Molina Healthcare, who discussed health issues with parents and handed out health-related materials.

Guests were treated to refreshments while Varnett’s very own Mr. Wiley, a second grade teacher, sang holiday songs in the Southwest Campus cafeteria. Treats included hot chocolate, ginger bread cookies and a brown bag that contained apples, bananas and pears. In addition, Varnett raffled off 20 giant turkeys, courtesy of the cafeteria staff.

Parents also visited classrooms where they worked with their children on holiday decorations. And as part of the fun, PreK students sang "Jingle Bells" with Santa, who took time out of his busy schedule to appear in every classroom.

“Our students were happy to have their family spend time with them, sing carols, play games and make holiday crafts,” said Ms. Brown, campus director of Southwest PreK.
