Southwest earns student attendance certificate

Congratulations to the Southwest campus, whose students achieved a 97 percent attendance rate in the first six weeks of school.

Dr. Margaret Stroud, Varnett's superintendent, presented a certificate to Mr. Jesse Arps, the campus director, during the district's leadership meeting on Tuesday. Mr. Arps shared the certificate with Ms. Pamella Thomas and the rest of the staff.

Ms. Thomas is the one who calls parents in the morning to find out why their child may not be in school on any given day. (Ms. Thomas talks about her important task in this VIDEO)

Education experts say the attendance rate is important for obvious reasons: students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently. It's also difficult for the teacher and the class to build their skills and progress if a large number of students are frequently absent.

The campus has 421 students in grades one through eight.

Congratulations to the campus, parents and students for a job well done!
