Southwest first graders in Ms. Michele Colbert's class became authors and illustrators as they completed a book called "If I Could Fly" before presenting a signed copy to Varnett's superintendent, Dr. Margaret Stroud
Each student had a page to write and another page to draw in the 40-plus page book before it was published by studentreasures.com, a company created to motivate students to write, create a lasting memory, make learning fun, help students tell their story, inspire students to learn and develop life-long skills. The company turns student stories into professionally bound books.
The superintendent, truly impressed, said the next step for these students would be to write an entire chapter in a continuing effort to build a writing portfolio that would open the door to future opportunities. She was then presented a pre-signed copy of the book.(video).
Ms. Colbert explained how the class arrived at the title of the book in this video. The students' parents were able to purchase the books on the studenteasures.com website, ranging from $19,99 to $24,99. The proceeds went to the company, Ms. Colbert said.
This isn't the first time Varnett has used studentreasures.com. Check out these stories:
Meanwhile, congratulations to our first-grade authors and illustrators!
