Veterinarian talks about dogs, cats, critters to kindergarten students

If you like pets, then you probably like vets.

So it's no wonder that Dr. Kristy Kyle, a veterinarian at Westbury Animal Hospital, was a popular guest as she talked about her job to kindergarten students in the Southwest Campus multi-purpose room. She didn't bring any pets from the next-door facility, but the students were engaged nevertheless.

Dr. Kyle said she not only cares for injured and wounded animals, but also has to soothe the nerves of people who are often distressed when their pets are hurting. The hospital mission is "Compassionate care and commitment - 24 hours a day."

Dr. Kyle grew up in Houston prior to moving to the Chicago suburbs. After graduating from Wheaton College, she pursued a master's degree in Philosophy at Texas A&M University. After working several years in Houston, she completed her DVM degree from Texas A&M. She is a member of the Harris County Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Texas Veterinary Medical Association and the American Animal Hospital Association of Feline Practitioners.

In addition to addressing the students, Dr. Kyle also took questions from the students, some of whom were wearing medical-style clothing as part of Community Helpers Week.

On Tuesday, six officers from the Houston Police Department talk the students about "stranger danger" and safety.
