Balloons lined the fences of the Varnett Public School - Southwest Campus, as students, parents and community members filed in for the annual school carnival.
The carnival was held Saturday, October 30, 2010, and it is an annual fundraiser for the school.
From face painting to bowling to a scavenger hunt, the games and activities were fun for children of all ages.
One of the most popular attractions was the haunted house.
Linda Hawkins, Varnett Southwest fourth-grade teacher, said the line for the haunted house stretched around the corner with children waiting to be frightened.
“The children were very excited and said the haunted house was freaky and spooky,” Ms. Hawkins said. “Many of them came through multiple times. They couldn’t get enough of it. All the kids were saying ‘the haunted house was the bomb.’”
Carnival goers had a wide range of food items to choose from, which included turkey legs, frito pies, hotdogs, nachos and much more.
Shannon Dimery, Varnett fifth grader, said his favorite food was the turkey leg.
“People kept saying it was good, and I wanted to taste it for myself,” Shannon said.
With any event, there was a lot of preparation to make the carnival successful.
Crystal Colbert, Varnett third grade teacher and co-chairperson for the carnival, said
planning the carnival was a wonderful experience.
“Overall, I think the community enjoyed themselves,” Colbert said, “and that is what matters most.”
