Houston firefighters came to the Southwest Campus recently and showed students what their jobs are all about.
The pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students gathered in semi-circles and watched as one firefighter put on his protective gear resembling that of a space suit. The students were fascinated and took turns slapping hands with him as he approached one child after another.
The event -- held in late October -- was part of community service week when professionals visited the campuses and explained their work. The firefighters also emphasized safety during their presentations and then let the students enter and exit the fire truck.
Overall, it was a great learning experience for the students and illustrated once again that teaching is not confined to the classroom.
