Cheer team rallies for Westbury High while promoting Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Southwest students cheered for the Westbury High School football team at Delmar Stadium on October 28, but the cheer team also had another purpose.

Wearing shirts declaring "Cheer for the Cure" with a touch of pink, they acknowledged the ending of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in a show of unity and goodwill.

Westbury invited the Southwest team to an after-school cheer camp the week before the game and the two squads practiced together before kickoff.

The Southwest students "learned a total of six cheers and were able to perform with the Westbury cheerleaders at the game,” said Ms. Francesca Mims, a cheerleading coach who teaches English to seventh and eighth graders. “There was a little drizzle but they made it through so they could get the experience.”
