Students exposed to farmers, military and more at Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

Southwest visited the rodeo on February 28th (K-2) and 29th (3rd -5th), continuing an annual tradition for the Varnett School with the purpose of introducing other cultures and traditions to our students. The rodeo held during the school day intends to introduce to students the expansive world of agriculture and on February 29 our students learned about Future Farmers of America (FFA). Students from other school district were on hand to discuss what their roles are within this program and their responsibilities to care for animals that are on display at the Rodeo.

3rd - 5th graders had the unique experience of sharing the spotlight with members of the Armed Forces for the United States of America. February 29 was dedicated to them and they were honored with a luncheon during the day. On hand were war utility vehicles for our students, who also talked to the military members to learn about their showcase. The military personnel was very friendly and welcoming and our students and parents were very impressed

Overall, the rodeo field trip was a fantastic event and all our students and parents had a great time. The staff wants to personally thank our parents for their support. If it were not for their dedication and commitment to our students and our program, we would not be able to have such a successful field trip. We had more than 880 students and parents at the rodeo over two days. We hope to see each one of you next school year.
