Parents defy bad weather, flock to Open House

The Southwest Campus expected a strong turnout for Open House/Parent Night Thursday evening and we were not disappointed.

More than 200 parents came out to show support for students and teachers as we delve into the 2012-13 academic school year. Dr. M. Annette Cluff, Varnett’s superintendent, expressed her gratitude for the parental support even though the weather was less than perfect.

Dr. Cluff shared the wonderful news that Varnett was among only 28 percent of all public school districts in the state to meet the No Child Left Behind standards and our individual campuses were among 44 percent of those in Texas to do so.

Under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, a school met Adequate Yearly Progress requirements if 87 percent or more students passed the state reading/English language arts test; 83 percent passed the state mathematics test, 95 percent participated in the state testing program and, depending on the grade level, had either a 75 percent graduation rate or a 90 percent attendance rate.

Heavy on technology
We are pleased that parents took the opportunity to visit their children’s classrooms and view the latest technology available to them. Information/technology was the theme of the evening as teachers showed parents how they use the Promethean Boards, a large display that combines a white board, computers and a projector. The boards allow for interactive teaching and learning and engages our students in a positive way.

During their visit, parents of 3rd through 5th graders rotated through classrooms, just as their children do each school day as they learn the core subjects of reading, math and science.

As we move forward, we welcome continued parental support for the various events that will take place this school year.
