From the desk of Nurse Allen

It's flu season!

In Health today, I wanted to educate kindergarten and first-grade students on the importance of vaccines and the proper ways to avoid viruses. A video from PBS, entitled "Sid the Science Kid," was shown in class with follow-up questions.

The children had a blast and everyone was certified as official "Flu Fighters."

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone 6 months and older get a flu vaccine each year. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against the flu. A flu vaccine is needed every year because flu viruses are constantly changing. It’s not unusual for new flu viruses to appear each year. The flu vaccine is formulated each year to keep up with the flu viruses as they change. Go to the CDC website for comprehensive information about the 2012-13 flu season.
