Students at the Southwest Campus did their part to make sure homeless families have food for Thanksgiving Day.
As part of the 4th grade’s annual community service project, Pre-K through 5th grade students donated eight large boxes and six bags of canned goods to the Star of Hope, a community organization dedicated to meeting the needs of homeless men, women and children.
The two-week collection of goods is expected to benefit more than 30 families, said Myrtle Brownell, a fourth-grade teacher.
“We have a lot of people who can’t afford holiday meals and the students were excited to help feed them,” Ms. Brownell said.
Some students helped carry the goods from the classrooms to the Star of Hope truck, making the donation complete.
“Thank you so much for the donation,” said Star of Hope representative Larry Reynolds.
Dr. M. Annette Cluff, Varnett’s superintendent, is a firm believer of students giving back to the community and the fourth-grade effort was just one of many student community service projects conducted throughout the district.
