Proceeds from surplus garage sale items to benefit veterans

Items that were not sold during Varnett’s recent garage sales have found a home at the Purple Heart Service Foundation in Houston.

Students from Ms. Yolonda Williams’ fifth-grade class Monday  loaded boxes, clothes, small appliances, pillows, suitcases, plants, handbags and even a pair of crutches into the Purple Heart van. The items were stored in a Southwest PreK room where the sales took place.

Proceeds from the donations will go toward financial support for veterans and their families, education and scholarships, legal representation for veterans’ claims and legislative representation in Congress.

“This is part of our community service project,” Ms. Williams said. Students throughout the district perform community service projects as a way to give back to the community and to gain an understanding of the less fortunate.

Terrell Russell, Varnett’s assistant facilities director, supervised the students in loading the van.

Throughout the donatestuff.com website,  people may donate clothing and other household items to the Purple Heart Household Discard Program. “Your donation helps make it possible for Purple Heart to assist combat-wounded veterans, promote patriotism,  support necessary legislative initiatives; and most importantly, provide services to all veterans and their families,” the website states.
