Parents visit classrooms, key in on children's progress

Parents took the opportunity Wednesday to meet with teachers and visit classrooms to get a closer look at how their children are progressing at Varnett-Southwest.

Teachers showed proud parents the work their children have completed since school started on Aug. 26. They also made use of the Promethean Boards, demonstrating the interactive learning technology that uses laptops and screens for classroom viewing.

The visits and activities were held at the Southwest Campus and Southwest PreK classrooms. Teachers presented updates on how students are progressing and reviewed with parents the rules and expectations of teachers. The evening also was used to recruit parents to participate with their children during this school year’s events, such as the rodeo, field trips and other activities.

“The parents were excited about the Open House and very pleased with the progress their children are making,” said Ms. Dorothy Carloss, a kindergarten teacher. “We discussed the curriculum, school uniform policy, attendance, homework, classwork and behavior.”

Some parents did a little teaching of their own, using literature and other educational materials in the classrooms to test their children. Other students needed no prodding, reading books or writing on their own.

The next event is Picture Day on Friday, Oct. 4, in which students will be required to dress in their uniforms.
