Students at the Southwest Campus showed their generosity in December by delivering about 200 toys for needy children before the holidays.
The school-wide effort was part of a community service project by and for the school’s kindergarten students, who presented the toys to the Star of Hope on Dec. 16.
The toys, all news, came from students and their families and included popular items such as Barbie dolls, Spider Man, Green Lantern and Hello Kitty games, teddy bears and more, said Ms. Dorothy Carloss, a kindergarten teacher.
Ms. Dana Payne’s first-grade students led the field by bringing 30 toys -- and earned a pizza party for their efforts.
“We wanted to help those unfortunate kids who didn’t have a toy,” Ms. Carloss said. The toy campaign was part of an overall mission by the district to gather and donate food and toys for needy families and children.
Star of Hope is an agency dedicated to meeting the needs of homeless men, women and their children. On Christmas Day, the Star of Hope Mission was home to an estimated 1,200 individuals.
Varnett thanks those who participated in helping bring smiles to children’s faces.
