Because February is Black History Month, I wanted my students to be aware of the diversity of talent of African Americans and their history.
My kindergarten students were given the names of African Americans to research. They dressed the part of that person, recited information on what that person did and explained why they chose that person. The students were amazed how well each of their classmates dressed the role of the famous African Americans.
The names included Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, Sojourner Truth, Ruby Bridges. George Washington Carver, Mae Jemison, Harriet Tubman, Madame C.J. Walker, Coretta Scott King, Althea Gibson, Bill Pickett, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, President Barack Obama and others.
The judges were Ms. Williams, first-grade teacher; Ms. Frazier, kindergarten teacher, and Ms. Jones, K-2 curriculum coordinator. In the end, all of the 19 students were declared winners.
We look forward to incorporating this project into our curriculum every year.
