Open House at Southwest Campus

Dozens of parents and children Wednesday gathered in the cafeteria, collected free books and visited classrooms during an open house event at the Southwest Campus.

Dr. Stroud, Varnett’s interim superintendent, and Ms. Mukes, the new campus director, gave a brief welcome with the superintendent pointing to key staff changes to better meet the academic needs of all students.

Parents and students then lined up to collect copies of “SuperKids,” which included reading books and work books with comprehension questions for each story. "Superkids," Ms. Mukes said, accommodates "various reading levels."

The guests also were treated to bottled water, Capri Sun and cookies.

In the classrooms, teachers conducted power point presentations on instruction, had one-on-one conversations with parents and answered questions.

Parents also noticed the colorful posters and presentations on the walls of each classroom that addressed learning and behavioral expectations.

“Southwest is pleased and grateful for so many parents to show up and be actively involved in the academic success of their children,” Ms. Mukes said.
