Kindergartners dress in the spirit of the First Thanksgiving

Kindergartners on Thursday portrayed Pilgrims and American Indians for the First Thanksgiving as part of a social studies project.

The major topics were customs and traditions. Dressed in costumes, the children went to the Southwest Campus cafeteria where the student body was served sliced turkey with gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, roll, fruit and milk.

Parents also attended. "We had a lot of parents there," said Ms. Melissa Phillips, the district food service manager. "It was a pretty good turnout."

The holiday feast dates back to November 1621, when the newly arrived Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians gathered at Plymouth for an autumn harvest celebration, an event regarded as America’s “First Thanksgiving," according to history.com.

The kindergarten lesson plan called for students to be able to identify and record the history of the First Thanksgiving through drawings, writing and pictures. They also were asked to identify pictures of the First Thanksgiving as well as draw or cut pictures from magazines, books or from sales paper.
