Northeast gets revenge on Southwest in basketball rematches

Before the start of a second basketball doubleheader at The Varnett School Southwest, the Northeast team sported purple and the home team wore green as the teams showed off their basketball uniforms for the first time.

The Northeast team made its second Southwest visit on May 17 and this time the results were different.  Losing back-to-back games at Southwest by scores of 24 to 11 and 31 to 10 in April, Northeast turned the tables, winning 20-16 and 12-9  on Southwest's home court.

The games were the latest in the development of  The Varnett Public School's new sports programs under the leadership of Dr. Margaret Stroud, district superintendent, and Mr. Lonnie Reynolds, the district's athletic director.

The games featured a lot of energy and enthusiasm from players, cheerleaders, staff and parents.

On May 21, the Southwest team traveled to Lakewood Community Center near the Northeast campus to play two more games. It was the same result, with Northeast winning both games, 17-10 and 10-3. The Northeast cheerleaders and dancers had a chance to attend the games for the first time.

The twin victories extended the Northeast's winning streak to four.

A special thanks goes to the Lakewood Community Center (a part of the City of Houston Parks and Recreation Department, and Ms. Tiffany Kellum, the Lakewood recreation supervisor, for hosting the event.
