Now that school is out, it’s time to recognize two key members of The Varnett School Southwest.
Ms. Melissa Rivera and Ms. Laquita White have been named Teacher of the Year and Staff Member of the Year, respectively.
Ms. Rivera has been a member of the Varnett team since 2015. During that time, she has taught grades 1 and 2 and has served as a team leader for the past two years. She was chosen by her Southwest campus colleagues.
Mr. Jesse Arps, the campus director, praised Ms. Rivera for presenting "quality instruction, day in and day out." He also said Ms. Rivera produces good testing results, submits lesson plans in a timely manner and actively participates in all school events and activities.
For Ms. White, this is her second year receiving the award. The teacher assistant also was chosen by her colleagues.
"She collaborates with staff and never says 'no' to any project," Mr. Arps said. He added that Ms. White volunteers for community events and played a key role in the Hurricane Harvey relief effort.
