Book Character Day at Southwest

A scheduled "Trunk or Treat Day" turned into "Treats at the Pavilion" Wednesday as rain forced staff, parents and students to go undercover.

But the change of venue didn't stop the fun as young students sported costumes of some of their favorite educational characters. The activity is an alternative to the recognition of Halloween.

Starting at about 2:30 p.m., students lined up to collect treats such as popcorn, pretzels, Rice Krispie treats, animal crackers, natural juices, chips and cheese puffs. Parents and staff working the line also passed out pencils and little books.

Meanwhile, the middle school students had a dance at the Southwest campus cafeteria.

On Book Character Day, students and staff dress up as their favorite characters from books they love in an effort to promote literacy. It also tests the imagination of students as they come to school with colorful and creative attire.
